What are "superfoods"?

Uncomfortable answers to questions/12 February 2022

More often than not, people want to believe in a simple solution. There are indeed foods that are packed with more benefits than other foods from the same group: buckwheat is always better than rice, quinoa is better than millet, etc.

This means that there will be a lot more vitamins/micronutrients per 1 serving of buckwheat than rice. This type of food is called "superfood".

A few years ago, for the first time, everyone in droves started highlighting particularly "important", "necessary", trendy and "working" foods. The first to fall into this lineup were chia seeds, which contain a fair amount of plant protein, fiber, with them so all the trendy desserts and so on. Since then, companies’ marketing strategies have been quick to pick up on the idea.

"Superfood" can be called very simple things: rose hips, apple, millet, walnuts. The important thing is that these are all whole foods created by nature. Food that hasn’t had time to do anything with yet. It’s regular food that’s already packed with benefits and needs to be chewed.

It’s a very important term where you can straddle that line of marketing and history, because a wholesome product is always going to be whole and it’s not going to be in a package. I don’t need to read the composition of carrots, but the composition of carrot chips, carrot juice or carrot cake does.

So to form you some very simple understanding: healthy food is really very simple food.
