Silence is the new luxury of the modern world

Useful tips/4 July 2024

Today, even if you don’t live in a noisy city or neighborhood, constant outside noise can be a constant companion in your life. Everyone is so used to background noise that they sometimes intentionally create it to avoid unwanted thoughts or feelings. However, have you ever wondered what benefits silence can bring?

Improved brain health

Silence has a direct effect on our brains, because being in silence promotes the formation of new brain cells in the hippocampus, the memory center of the brain. This improves emotional regulation and learning ability. By strengthening the hippocampus, we can process information more efficiently, especially in stressful situations. When we are more aware of what is happening and process information fully, we are more likely to let go and move on. Silence allows the brain to rest, reflect, and make room for new experiences.

Silence and mindfulness

Mindfulness (vigilance) is a practice that helps you focus on the present moment. Silence greatly enhances mindfulness, allowing us to be present to both the external world and internal sensations. The absence of auditory stimuli allows us to better perceive our thoughts and emotions and become a witness to our inner world. Self-awareness is a long process that helps us recognize our patterns of behavior and habits in order to keep the useful ones and let go of those that hold us back.

Reducing stress levels

Silence can be an effective way to reduce stress. Instead of seeking out guided meditations or inspirational podcasts, try simply being in silence. Even two minutes can be more calming than relaxing music, lowering blood pressure and increasing oxygen flow to the brain. Being in silence allows us to tune into our true nature, strengthening the connection between mind, body and inner state.

Improved creativity

Silence promotes creativity. When we reduce auditory stimuli, it allows us to be more present and aware of what is going on around us. In a quiet state, the mind becomes more relaxed, which promotes inspiration. This can stimulate the mind to dream, generate new ideas and find clear solutions to difficult situations.

Some tips on how to add more silence to your life:

1. Try to start your morning slowly, in silence.
2. If you meditate, do so in complete silence, which will allow you to better focus on your inner sensations.
3. When walking, avoid using headphones, enjoy the silence and sounds around you.
4. Set aside time for silence where you just sit and allow yourself to feel and reflect. When you have this opportunity it is a luxury, appreciate it and don’t spend those minutes on social media.

Silence is a powerful tool for improving brain health, reducing stress and increasing creativity. It can significantly improve and balance your internal state and make your brain sharper. Don’t be afraid of silence - it can be the element you’ve been missing to experience total self-control.
