How do you deal with picky eating?

Teaching children to eat healthy/18 June 2024

Picky eating is a common problem among children and many parents face the challenge of how to coax their children to eat balanced meals.

I will try to provide you with effective strategies to help you deal with picky eaters.

Why do children become picky eaters?

  • natural distrust of new foods
  • changes in taste and appetite at different developmental periods
  • influence of environment (peers) and social factors

Strategies for parents:

1. Be patient and remain calm.

It is important not to give up or show negative emotions if your child refuses to eat a new food. Studies show that it can take children up to 10-15 tries to get used to a new flavor.

2. Make mealtimes interesting.

  • Involve children in meal preparation: allow children to participate in choosing foods and preparing meals. This can increase their interest in trying new foods.
  • Serve meals creatively: use colorful fruits and vegetables to create fun patterns or images on the plate.

3. Be a role model for your children.

Children often imitate their parents. Set a good example by eating healthy foods and showing positive attitudes toward new foods.

4. Establish and maintain a regular eating schedule.

Provide regular meals and snacks at set times. This will help children develop healthy eating habits and reduce food fads.

5. Avoid coercion.

Forcing food can lead to negative attitudes toward certain foods. Allow children to decide for themselves how much food they want to eat.

Picky eating is a normal developmental stage that can be overcome with patience, creativity and consistency. Remember that your example and support are key to this process.
